Personal (please list occupation, education and family):
I am a certified nurse midwife at Access Health/Avera Marshall. I graduated from Marshall Sr. High School, then went to Northland College and received my first bachelor's degree in mathematics. I then went back to school for nursing at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. I received my Masters in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco.
I have a 6 year old son who goes to Kindergarten at Lynd Public School.
Why am I running for a school board seat?
I'm running for a seat on the Lynd School Board because I want to be able to bring transparency and accountability to our students and families. I want to support and augment the unique opportunities that Lynd offers to our kids. This includes our smaller class sizes and family-centered opportunities. I see Lynd as having the chance to become one of the premier schools in this region with continued focus on the current activities that incorporate the surrounding region and environment that is rich in natural sciences. Lynd has the ability and opportunity to be the area's public school of choice.
What are the major issues facing the District?
As with most schools in the area, Lynd faces challenges with finances and student enrollment. Since Lynd is such a small school district, small changes in these areas have a big impact on our students, teachers, and families.
What are the areas of concern regarding student achievement in the district?
It is important for our district to be able to recruit and retain the quality teachers that work so hard to help our students succeed and excel. This may mean we look at how we compare with other schools in our region when it comes to teaching salaries and contracts.
Do you have specific suggestions for improvement?
We may need to look outside the box for funding opportunities and ways to showcase the uniqueness of our school and everything it has to offer. This couldlook like partnership opportunities with local resources and organizations like Camden State Park, magnet school standing, as well as theme based grants to support the unique programs we already offer in the arts and sciences. My goal is to look ahead and consider all options.
