Hwy. 19 still on pace despite rain, contractors say

MARSHALL -- Work on the reconstruction of East College Drive in Marshall has continued to make progress, in spite of a streak of rainy weather.
This week, construction crews were keeping an eye on the weather and sometimes changing their plans.
"Tuesday and Wednesday night, everyone worked late, trying to use as much sunlight as possible," said Erika Coudron, of R and G Construction.
Thursday's rain meant asphalt paving crews couldn't work on tying in side streets to the new concrete on Highway 19 (College Drive), Coudron said. At the same time, concrete workers took advantage of a break in the rain Thursday afternoon to try and get as much form work completed as possible, so they could pour concrete for sidewalks, road medians and pedestrian crossings in the future.
Although rainy weather puts limits what kind of construction can be done, crews are still working with a goal of completing the Highway 19 construction by the end of October.
"We're still on pace to have it done by October 30," Coudron said.
Current construction is mainly focused on the segment of East College Drive between West Marshall Street and Bruce Street. In a Thursday construction update, Coudron said crews continued to do concrete work for sidewalks and driveways, as well as pedestrian crossings between Park Avenue and North Third Street. One crossing will be installed at the intersection of Park Avenue and College Drive, and another will be installed at the intersection of North Third Street and College Drive.
Concrete work will continue next week. Weather permitting, concrete work is planned to be completed on a center median on East College Drive at the intersection with West Marshall Street. After construction, the West Marshall Street intersection will be right-in, right-out only. Asphalt paving for side street tie-ins is also planned to be completed next week, weather permitting.
