MARSHALL -- There will be a lot going on for music lovers in Marshall this weekend, with two different events happening Saturday.
The Prairie Jam country music concert will be returning to Marshall with a new venue at the Red Baron Arena and Expo. The annual Pursuit of Excellence marching band event will also bring together roughly a dozen high school marching bands from around the region.
Pursuit of Excellence is both an educational experience and a competition for high school marching bands. During the day Saturday, bands and color guard participate in clinics where they can get feedback from judges. In the evening, students will compete at Mattke Field at the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.
The lineup of marching bands at this year's Pursuit includes bands from South Dakota and Nebraska. The Marshall Tiger Marching Band will also perform in a judged exhibition.
Fans and members of the public are welcome to attend Saturday night's performance. Admission is $15 at the gate. Band performances are scheduled to begin starting at 5:30 p.m.
This year, Prairie Jam will feature headliners Slamabama. Fargo-based Slamabama are new to Marshall, and their show, “Party In the Back,” will be a celebration of country music of the 1990s and 2000s.
Visit Marshall said Slamabama performs hits from country music legends like Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Toby Keith, Faith Hill, Diamond Rio, Martina McBride and more. The show will recreate the look and sound of an era of country music.
Opening for Slamabama will be “Shania! The Hits,” a musical tribute celebrating country music superstar Shania Twain.
The doors of the Red Baron Arena and Expo will open at 6 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are available online only through the Visit Marshall website, at visitmarshallmn.com/prairie-jam/.
