MARSHALL -- This week, the Marshall School Board took action to set a preliminary levy for 2027.
Specific figures weren't available at Monday's school board meeting, but board members voted unanimously to certify the maximum levy authority for the district.
MPS Finance Director Sarah Kirchner explained how the levy authority worked.
"The state requires us to have a decision on the preliminary levy by Sept. 30 of each year, and like most other districts, we are requesting the preliminary levy to be approved at the maximum authority," Kirchner said. "The numbers have not all come in from the state or districts to determine that exact levy amount yet. That will take place over the next couple of months."
A proposed levy limit certification included in Monday's board agenda said after Oct. 1, the county auditor should consult the Minnesota Department of Education for the school district's current levy limitation. That amount will be used for Truth in Taxation notices from the school district.
Kirchner said staff will present the final levy dollar amounts to the school board for approval before Dec. 31.
"And the reason we do the maximum is because we can't go any higher than that, but we can approve a lower levy," said school board member Matt Coleman.
Board members approved the maximum levy authority request.
