Arts and Living History Fest moves indoors

MARSHALL -- Marshall's Arts and Living History Festival will give visitors a peek into the past this weekend, with arts and crafts, live music and family-friendly activities. With rain showers in the forecast for Saturday, the festival has also moved to a new location.
"We are moving indoors, at the Red Baron Arena and Expo," said Cassi Weiss, of Visit Marshall.
Festival organizers had been watching the weather this week, before making the call to hold the free event inside, instead of at Memorial Park.
Organizers are hoping for another good year at the festival. The Arts and Living History Festival is one of Marshall's newer community events.
"This was kind of born out of the city of Marshall's 150th anniversary celebration," Weiss said.
The event has continued over the past few years.
Weiss said this year's festival will still have a lineup of vendors including local artisans, live entertainment, and kids' activities. The one part of the festival that will be postponed this year will be a living history tour that was planned at the 9/11 Memorial at the park.
The Arts and Living History Festival will include nods to different eras of history. The Richie Lee & the Fabulous 50s band will play music from the roots of rock 'n roll. Other activities, like carving and old-style photo portraits, look back at earlier times.
Weiss said different kinds of arts and crafts will be part of the festival. Local artist SammyJo Miller will be hosting an interactive art project that the community can join in. Other hands-on crafts will also be available for kids and families to try. Weiss said soap carving got a positive response at last year's festival. While it soap carving uses some of the same techniques as other forms of carving, "It's a lot safer, and it's fun for kids and adults to do," she said.
The Arts and Living History Festival will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Red Baron Arena and Expo. Admission is free for all attendees.
