Number of rounds played up, manager says

MARSHALL -- It's been a busy year at Marshall Golf Club, pro shop manager Benjamin Nath said.
Nath estimated that there have been around 27,000 rounds of golf played at MGC since March. That was up, from about 25,000 rounds last year, he said.
"Our green fees are up this year, which means more people are paying to play," as opposed to paying for a club membership, Nath said.
On Friday, the golf course was busy, with groups of college golfers in Marshall for this weekend's SMSU invitational. Nath said MGC is also anticipating that area golfers will continue to visit the course through October.
Nath said the work that superintendent Lance Tykwinski does to maintain the course, and the fact that MGC has 18 holes, help make Marshall a destination for many golfers.
Nath, who is originally from Luverne, said he played at MGC for years before becoming pro shop manager.
MGC doesn't only draw in golfers from the Marshall area.
"People come from all over," he said.
Players have come to Marshall from the Twin Cities and communities in South Dakota and Iowa. Nath said MGC has even had a visit from a couple who were trying to play a round of golf in all 50 U.S. states.
League play is an active part of MGC, Nath said. The majority of league players are men, with 260 players in the men's league, he said. There were also around 40 to 50 women's league players this year, he said. Nath hoped to continue encouraging growth in the women's league. MGC introduced a new social league on Tuesday nights this year. "It's not as competitive a format," Nath said.
Dry conditions for part of the summer posed some challenges for maintaining the golf course this year, Nath said. However, recent rains have been positive for the course.
Fall is still a busy time at MGC, he said. Men's golf league wrapped up this week, and Nath said the end of league play opens up opportunities for the public to play. Plus, he said, fall is when the grass usually starts to recover from dry and hot summer conditions, temperatures are milder and there are fewer bugs outside.
"It's absolutely beautiful out there," Nath said.
MGC was advertising fall rates on social media this week.
While October will give people more chances to play a round of golf, MGC will be closed on Monday, Nath said. MGC will be aerating the golf course that day. The process, which pokes small holes in the soil, will help encourage healthier grass on the golf course, and help improve playability.
