Primary election is on Tuesday — here’s what you need to know

By Griffin Peterson 3 min read

MARSHALL --- Minnesota voters will go to the polls Tuesday for the primary election.

Voters will choose candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. Senate and House of Representative, secretary of state, state auditor and the attorney general.

The ballot is a partisan primary ballot, meaning voters are only permitted to vote for the candidates of one party.

According to Steven Anderson, the Marshall city clerk, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. He said the busiest times being right when the polls open, around lunchtime and anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

"Generally, if you’re preregistered, it takes less than 10 minutes," Anderson said.

However, he said it will take a little longer if you have to register to vote. Registering to vote will require proof of residency.

"If you’re a newer resident it might take longer to register with a photo ID, taking about 15-20 minutes."

For those unable to vote in person, absentee voting is still an option. Anderson said voters can go to the Lyon County Courthouse up to Aug. 10 to vote absentee.

While voters can request a mail in ballot online at mnvotes.gov, at this point they may not receive their ballot before election day. At the courthouse, voters can choose to either put their ballot into an envelope or a voting machine, the same kind used on Election Day.

For information about what ward voters are in, or info they need to bring to vote for the first time, info can be found on mnvotes.gov
