‘He always has a place here’

MARSHALL -- Whether he was helping out at the 4-H barns or working with the annual ribbon auction, Patrick Remiger was always busy around the Lyon County Fair. On Friday, 4-H members and leaders said his presence wouldn't be forgotten.
"We want to honor him, and make sure he always has a place here at the Lyon County Fair," said 4-H youth development Extension educator Sam Jens.
Remiger, a dairy farmer from rural Wood Lake, was actively involved with the Swan Lake Skippers 4-H club, the 4-H dairy project, and the ribbon auction, Jens said. Remiger died in September in an accidental fire truck crash.
Before the start of the 4-H dairy cattle show on Friday afternoon, members of the Swan Lake Skippers 4-H club, the Lyon County dairy project, and the Remiger family gathered in the arena to dedicate the show to Patrick. A new memorial bench, engraved with Remiger's name, will become part of the fair arena.
As a 4-H parent and supporter, "Pat's always been in the fair," said Janelle Louwagie, the Lyon County 4-H dairy superintendent and one of the leaders of the Swan Lake Skippers. She said Remiger would always help put up shades at the barn each year at the fair, and he also did a lot with the ribbon auction.
Louwagie said the Swan Lake Skippers bought the memorial bench, and picked out the colors of red and black, to represent Remiger's service with the Wood Lake Fire Department. She said they also wanted to include the 4-H dairy project in the memorial dedication, because of Remiger's involvement with the area dairy community.
"We wanted a way to memorialize him," Louwagie said of the bench project. "He will be missed."
