Wood Lake Fair runs Monday - Wednesday

WOOD LAKE -- In the community of Wood Lake, there are a few summer traditions that have been going strong for more than 90 years.

"Our fair started in 1935, and we've always had three things," said Donna Ricke, of the Wood Lake Community Club. "We've always had fair exhibits, which we still have today. We've always had free entertainment, and we've had our hamburger stand."

Starting Monday, the traditions of the Wood Lake Fair are returning. The community fair runs Aug. 24-26 in Wood Lake.

Attractions like carnival rides, bingo, and the Wood Lake hamburger stand will be available all three nights of the fair. Special activities and free musical entertainment will also be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Ricke said.

Starting on Monday, fair entries for the exhibit hall will be accepted at the Wood Lake Community Center. The Wood Lake Fire Department will hold water fights starting at 6 p.m., followed by music by North Forty in the beer garden. Ricke said a new addition to the fair will also start Monday night.

"In the Community Center we're going to have a game show - Family Feud, which we haven't done before," she said. People can sign up to compete, and random contestants will be chosen to form "family" teams to play the game.

"We're going to give them little props," to help each team have its own theme, Ricke said.

On Tuesday, fair events include a pie and ice cream social at the Methodist Church in Wood Lake, and music by 3 Hour Download. Wednesday is the night of the fair's kiddie parade and grand parade. Kids can register for the kiddie parade starting at 5:30 p.m. The Grand Parade will start at 6:30. Wednesday evening will come to a close with performances by the Kingery Family and Hicktown Mafia.

Ricke said it takes a lot of work by community volunteers, the Community Club, and organizations like the Fire Department to make the annual fair a reality.

"We couldn't do it without volunteers," she said.
