SLAYTON -- The Murray County Fair has been underway this week, and things have been going well, organizers said.
"Last night, we had one of the biggest crowds we've had on a Wednesday," fair board president Stan Larson said Thursday.
This year's fair has featured a few new events, like the first ever Faith and Family Night that brought in a youth worship band on Wednesday.
There are still plenty of fun events ahead for visitors, as the fair heads into its final two days. Concerts, kids' inflatables, 4-H shows and more will continue today and Saturday at the fairgrounds in Slayton.
Friday evening tends to be a busy time for the fair, Larson said. This year, events on Friday will include an appearance by a special guest. Former South Dakota State University head football coach John "Stig" Stiegelmeier will be coming to the fair to talk about the book "Stig and the Rise of South Dakota State Football."
Stiegelmeier will be at the fair at 6 p.m. Friday.
Friday evening at the fair will continue with a pork loin supper near the Pork Producers Stand, and stock car races at the grandstand. The evening will finish up with a free concert by the Johnny Holm Band. The event is sponsored by Slayton Building Materials, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary as a business this year.
Some of the attractions at fair time will be going on close to the fairgrounds. This week, the Remembering Our Fallen traveling military tribute is at the Slayton soccer fields. The tribute features 34 towers with 5,500 names and photos of U.S. service members who lost their lives in the global war on terror since Sept. 11, 2001. The tribute will be on display until a closing ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Prairie Days Parade will also be making its way through downtown Slayton on Saturday afternoon. Fair visitors can see the fun at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Attractions that are available both Friday and Saturday include Bounce Around Inflatables, laser tag by Annandale Paintball, special museum exhibits and bingo.
