‘Beautiful day’ for best of show
1960 Plymouth Fury owner from Montevideo top winner in Ghent

GHENT -- Third time was a charm for Ron Binnebose's 1960 Plymouth Fury.
The Montevideo man had entered his classic vehicle in Dawson and Marietta and came home with no trophies. On Saturday, Binnebose entered his car in the Belgian American Days car show in Ghent and came home with two trophies. One of the them was the "Best of Show" trophy.
"What a beautiful day," Binnebose declared as he walked with his two trophies in his hands from the awards ceremony to his car up the street.
"Congratulations," a woman said to Binnebose as he walked by her. There were more congratulations before he finally arrived at his car.
"Kind of surprised me," he said as he sat down on a lawn chair next to the car.
The road to finding and restoring the vehicle was long and difficult, according to Binnebose.
"About a 12-year restoration on that," he said. "And it's been just one thing after another. The motor went out, the transmission went out. Ended up rebuilding all that."
Finding the car was just as difficult for his brother.
"My brother had one when he first got married back in 1962. He looked for another one. He looked in Rapids City, couldn't, come up with one and finally he spotted this one in Spearfish or Deadwood," Binnebose said. "(He) talked to the guy if he was interested in selling it and the guy wasn't. About a year later he happened to be driving by and the car was still there, and went over and talked to the guy's wife. He past away and she was willing to sell it. He bought it. Had it for a year and then my brother passed away. Ten years later his wife past away. None of the kids really wanted it and grandkids couldn't afford it so I said I'll buy it and I'm going to keep it in the family. I bought it 12 years ago."
"Love it," Binnebose said of the whole process of restoring the car and entering in car shows.
Binnebose also took home a top 10 trophy and enjoys going to the shows.
"The camaraderie of the drivers. You talk about cars," he said.
According to car show organizer Joette Remme, 106 vehicles entered the show from towns of Marshall, Minneota, Taunton, Porter, Canby, St. Leo, Clear Lake, South Dakota, Brookings, South Dakota, Sioux Falls,South Dakota,Montevideo, Clara City, Dawson, Benson, Springfield, DeGraff, Russell, Lynd, Tracy, Redwood Falls, Wood Lake, Cottonwood, Hadley, Slayton, Currie, Hanley Falls, Boyd, Garvin, Ghent, Lucan, Ruthton, Windom, Granite Falls, Danube, Balaton, Clarkfield, La Crosse, WI, Ortonville, Comfry, Madison, Marietta and Belview.
