Marshall looks at Aug. opening for Aquatic Center

By Deb Gau 2 min read

MARSHALL -- The dates aren't official yet, but the city of Marshall is looking at opening its new Aquatic Center in August.

In a report to the Marshall City Council on Tuesday, council member See Moua-Leske said construction is getting close to finished, and city staff were working on plans for both a "slow opening" and an official opening.

"We are hoping for a ribbon-cutting in the beginning of August sometime," Moua-Leske said. "We will post that when it becomes official."

Moua-Leske said current season pass holders for the Marshall Aquatic Center may have a chance to try out the new facilities early, but plans for a possible soft opening haven't been finalized yet.

Moua-Leske gave the council an update on Aquatic Center construction on Tuesday during the council's regular meeting. Moua-Leske and fellow council members Craig Schafer and John Alcorn are on the community committee for the new Marshall Aquatic Center.

Construction of the new Aquatic Center facility, near the corner of Saratoga Street and West College Drive, has been ongoing since last summer. Over the past several months, structures like a water slide tower, zero-depth and deep water pools, and a leisure river have all taken shape.

At a recent Aquatic Center committee meeting, "We did discuss the status of construction, and the timeline for opening," Moua-Leske said. It was a task that will require a lot of coordination with Parks and Recreation Superintendent Preston Stensrud, she said.

The committee discussed possibly having a "slow opening" at the new facility for current Aquatic Center season pass holders, Moua-Leske said. She encouraged pass holders to watch for further information on social media and the Marshall city website.

Last week, the plastering process for the swimming pools was completed, she said.

"Now, we have to wait 10 to 14 days for the plaster to cure,” she said.

The Minnesota Department of Health is scheduled to inspect the facility next week, Moua-Leske said. At the same time, work crews are also finishing tasks like installing landscape irrigation systems, sod and fences.

"Then there's a big list of other things we need to do like signage placement, punch list items, (lifeguard) training," Moua-Leske said.

"We're very excited. We got to walk through it, and it's looking really good," she said of the new Aquatic Center.
