MARSHALL -- A Minnesota commission has officially opened the application process to fill the vacancy left after the death of District Court Judge Tricia Zimmer. Interviews for new judicial candidates are expected to be held in early September, said an announcement by the office of Gov. Tim Walz.
Zimmer was appointed as a judge in Minnesota's Fifth Judicial District in 2018. Zimmer's legal career started in Lyon County, and she served as an assistant Lyon County attorney before later becoming a judge. She died June 27 at the age of 54.
On Friday, the Commission on Judicial Selection formally announced the vacancy in Zimmer's judicial seat. The announcement included two different vacancies in the Fifth Judicial District. In addition to Zimmer's seat, there will also be a vacancy when District Court Judge Gregory J. Anderson retires, the announcement said. One of the two judicial seats will be chambered in Marshall and Ivanhoe, while the other seat will be chambered in Mankato. Anderson is a judge in Blue Earth County District Court.
The announcement said the Commission on Judicial Selection "is searching for fair, experienced, and civic-minded individuals to serve on the bench and offer their talents and services to Minnesota's judicial system." According to state law, the commission will consider qualifications including integrity, judicial temperament, legal knowledge, experience and community service.
Individuals can request an application for a judge position by contacting the Office of the Governor at Judicial.Selection@state.mn.us. The application materials are due by 4 p.m. on Aug. 6, and should be addressed to the chair of the commission, Erin Sindberg Porter.
The Commission on Judicial Selection plans to hold candidate interviews in early September, the announcement said.
