Filing period opens for local elections
Seats open for city councils, school boards, town boards
MARSHALL — The filing period to run for city council, school board or township board in Minnesota communities opens today. Marshall City Clerk Steven Anderson said the city of Marshall will have a total of four seats up for election this fall, including a special election for the council vacancy in Marshall’s voting ward 2. Marshall Public Schools is also seeking candidates for a total of three school board seats.
The filing period for city, township and school board candidates will be from July 14-28.
In the city of Marshall, voters will be electing a total of four city council members this fall, Anderson said. Council member John Alcorn’s seat in Ward 1, See Moua-Leske’s seat in Ward 2, and Craig Schafer’s seat in Ward 3 are all up for election. In addition, the city will also be holding a special election in Ward 2 to fill the vacancy left when former council member Amanda Schwartz resigned earlier this spring.
Anderson said Marshall residents interested in running for council can file at the City Clerk’s Office, located on the second floor of Marshall City Hall, during business hours. On July 28, the clerk’s office will stay open until 5 p.m., he said.
Anderson said prospective city council candidates can also contact the clerk’s office via email or phone.
Several cities, school districts and townships in Lyon County also have seats that will be up for election this fall. The cities of Balaton, Cottonwood, Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Minneota, Russell and Taunton will each be electing a mayor and two city council members, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office candidate filing website. The city of Lynd will be holding elections for two city council seats, and the city of Tracy will hold elections for mayor and three city council members.
School board elections
The Marshall, Lakeview, Minneota and Lynd school boards will all be holding elections this fall. Marshall will have three seats on the school board up for election. Marshall Public Schools said the four-year terms for the three seats start in 2027. People who are interested in running for the school board can fill out an affidavit of candidacy at the MPS district office between July 14 and July 28.
The Lakeview and Minneota school districts will each have four school board seats up for election. The Lynd School Board will hold elections for three school board seats.
Township elections
Among Lyon County townships, Amiret Township will be holding elections for supervisor seat 3 and town treasurer. Eidsvold Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 2 and 3, and town treasurer. Fairview Township will hold elections for supervisor seat 1 and 2. Grandview Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 1 and 3, and town treasurer. Lynd Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 1 and 3, and town treasurer. Monroe Township will hold an election for supervisor seat 2. Nordland Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 1 and 3, and town treasurer. Rock Lake Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 1 and 2, and town treasurer. Shelburne Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 1 and 2, and for town treasurer. Sodus Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 2 and 3, and town treasurer. Westerheim Township will hold elections for supervisor seats 2 and 3, and town treasurer.
