Events rev up at YMC fair; a taste of Danish heritage in Tyler

Toys 4 Tots ride set for Saturday

There will be plenty of bull riding, speedway races, motorcycle engines roaring and Danish delicacies this weekend.

The Yellow Medicine County Fair is set at the fairgrounds in Canby, Aebleskiver Days will be held in Tyler, and the annual Toys 4 Tots ride will start in Amiret on Saturday morning.

Events at the Yellow Medicine County Fair start Thursday and run through Saturday. The fair will feature various 4-H events, including sheep, poultry, and rabbit shows. Ribbons will be awarded for the various winners of each event at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

"We have a very large number of all categories of animals registered this year," said fair president Teather Bliss. "We had to expand the horse barn for all the horse families in the area, and the cattle barn is always full."

Plenty of free entertainment is also on the schedule, including Kids Day on Thursday. The day will offer flower pot painting from 1-2 p.m., inflatable bouncy castles from 1-9 p.m., pizza and puzzles from 3-4 p.m., and live country music courtesy of Kayla Daniels from 5-7 p.m.

At 7 p.m. each night, the main event will take place at the grandstand. On Thursday, the Renegade Speedway Races will be held at Casino Raceway, and on Saturday,look for the Baja Races on the dirt road.

Bull riding is a new event on Friday at the grandstand. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.

"I’m just excited for people to see the improvements we’ve done," Bliss said. "We have a brand new ticket booth and beer garden I can’t wait for people to see."

Tyler will be hosting its Aebleskiver Days celebrating Tyler’s rich Danish cultural heritage.

According to the Aebleskiver Days celebration schedule, the event begins Friday morning with a golf tournament at 8 a.m. Later that afternoon, at 6:30 p.m. the fair will host a pool party and games at the Tyler Swimming Pool.

Saturday morning will be all about celebrating Danish delicacies. Starting at 8:30 a.m., the 4-H tent will serve aebleskiver with gluten free options. The Danebod sweet shop at the fair will also begin hosting Danish coffee cake strips and Danish butter cookies starting at 9 a.m.

The schedule also shows various events and activities for those who like to move. Registration for the 5K and 8-mile run begins at 7:45 a.m., and the all day men’s softball tournament will be played throughout the festival. The Kiddie Olympics will begin at the horse barn at 10 a.m., and an aebleskiver eating contest and talent show will be happening under the fair tent at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.

Meanwhile, the Sinister Brethren motorcycle club is hosting its annual Toys 4 Tots Motorcycle Fun Run on Saturday. Registration at the Roaring Lions Clubhouse in Amiret from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Cars and trucks are also invited. The registration fee is $20.

The ride to Balaton starts at 11 a.m., with a dinner and silent auction at the Balaton community center after the ride. Anyone is welcome to the dinner and auction at the community center after 5:30 p.m.
