MARSHALL -- The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department hired one new correctional officer after undergoing training for the safety of himself and others on the job, according to Sheriff Eric Wallen.
With Trent Esping now on the Lyon County corrections staff, there still one opening and possibly two more positions in the coming months, Wallen said.
In Lyon County, new correctional officers need to undergo a six-week program that includes training in every aspect of working inside the jail, which Esping started on Monday. In his first week, Esping has already worked on training in email and internet security, county policies, insurance information and human resources.
According to Wallen, hands-on experience and work inside the facility begins in week two, meaning after going through the proper insurance work and policy review, Esping will begin his training on location.
"Defensive training includes everything from protecting themselves to controlling an inmate for the protection of everyone else," Wallen said.
In addition to training for protection and defensive tactics, new hires receive hands-on experience on properly use equipment like handcuffs, Tasers and restraint chairs, said Wallen. As well as how to de-escalate situations and get through situations without needing to use force.
"I feel good about it," Wallen said. "He came in with a good attitude, he’s excited for it, and he’s looking to make a career out of it. As far as I can understand, he’s looking like a good fit for both of us."
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department still needs another correctional officer, with another officer looking for a promotion to a licensed officer in the coming months. There could potentially be two openings soon, said Wallen.
