MARSHALL -- There will be one contested race for the Marshall City Council this fall, and three contested seats on the Marshall School Board, according to candidate filings reported by the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office.
The filing period for city and school district offices in Minnesota closed at the end of the day Tuesday. In addition to the Marshall City Council and the Marshall Public School board, filings were reported for city council, township board and school board positions around Lyon County.
The city of Marshall has a total of four city council seats up for election in November. There will be one seat up for election in each of the city's three wards, plus a special election in Ward 2. The special election will be for a council member to fill the remainder of former council member Amanda Schwartz's term. Schwartz stepped down from her council position earlier this year, because she was moving away from Marshall.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office reported that council members See Moua-Leske and Craig Schafer were running unopposed for re-election in Wards 2 and 3, respectively. There was one candidate, Eric DeGroot, who filed for the special election in Ward 2.
There will be a contested election for the Ward 1 council seat, according to the Secretary of State's Office. Council member John Alcorn is running for re-election, against challenger Larry Magrath.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Marshall Public Schools had a total of six candidates running for three seats on the Marshall School Board. Current board member Sara Brink is running for re-election. The list of candidates also includes Julie Allen, Mike Braithwaite, Nathan Green, Ashley Pippin, and Bob Prince, according to the Secretary of State's Office.
By Tuesday afternoon, the Secretary of State's Office also listed candidates in area city, township and school board elections across Lyon County. A full list of filings can be found online at https://candidates.sos.mn.gov.
