Putting the pretzel back into Pretzel Days

LUCAN — The sign said “SuperPretzel Soft Pretzels” on a warmer displayed next to the beer stand at Lucan Pretzel Days on Saturday.

Selling pretzels shouldn’t be that unusual at an event called Pretzel Days. However, according to Lucan resident Lorna Plaetz, pretzels have been a no show at the yearly festival. She did recall some kind of microwavable pretzels being sold the last couple years.

Her daughter, Amelia Plaetz, recalled her parents talking about not having pretzels at Pretzel Days.

“They got Kathy Plaetz to make the pretzels and my mom picked up the warmer yesterday,” she said.

“Twenty-some years ago it was called Pretzel Days and then they kind of stopped doing it,” Lorna Plaetz said. “So for the last couple years they’ve had some like microwavable pretzels. So my husband said this year, we should have Kathy Plaetz, who makes everything, make us some pretzels, She gave us a couple different types. … We said lets go with original. We brought them and rented the soft pretzel machine and here we are. And this is Pretzels Days.” Lorna Plaetz said.

She said a sourdough pretzel recipe was used in making the pretzels. Proceeds from the pretzel sales go to the Lucan Boosters.

When asked if she tried one of the pretzels, Amelia Plaetz said they “were really good.”

“The best,” she said. “But I also like sourdough.”

Starting at $3.95/week.
