One dead, 3 injured in Cottonwood County crash

WESTBROOK — A Slayton man was killed in a three-vehicle crash involving a semi truck Friday afternoon in Cottonwood County, the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office said. Sean Goodman, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, and three other people were injured in the incident.

The crash remains under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.

First responders were called to the scene of a crash at the intersection of Cottonwood County Road 7 and Cottonwood County Road 13 around 1:12 p.m. Friday, the Sheriff’s Office said. It was reported that there were two vehicles and a semi involved in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office said it was determined that at the time of the crash, a 1998 Mack semi with a bottom dump trailer, driven by James Beeck, 69, of Fulda, was southbound on County Road 7 and a 2019 Buick Enclave driven by Julianne Paplow, 42, of Dundee, was northbound on County Road 7. A 2010 Subaru Forester driven by Goodman was eastbound on County Road 13.

Goodman failed to stop at a stop sign, entered the intersection, and was hit by the semi, the Sheriff’s Office said. The semi and the Subaru struck the Buick as they went into the southeast road ditch.

Beeck, Paplow, and a 12-year-old passenger in the Buick were all transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said. Goodman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Westbrook Fire Department, Westbrook Ambulance, Westbrook Police, Fulda Ambulance, the Cottonwood County Highway Department and Windom Towing all responded at the crash scene.
