Local America 250 activities lead up to 4th fireworks
MARSHALL — The 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is approaching fastand local organizations in Marshall will be extending some of their July 4th celebrations for the occasion.
Events like a medallion hunt and activities at the Lyon County Museum are among the ways to join in the fun, and the city of Marshall will also be adding some new activities before the annual fireworks display on the 4th.
“We started planning a little early this year, to do some more special activities,” said Jasmine DeSmet, community education coordinator at Marshall Community Services. “It’s a big milestone.”
Some of the new events include a reading of the Declaration of Independence and a “S’mores station” serving up patriotic-themed treats at Independence Park.
DeSmet said Independence Day celebrations in Marshall actually start well before the Fourth. From June 24 through July 3, the Lyon County Museum in Marshall will be offering complimentary treats and beverages, discounts on gift shop items, and special activities like a scavenger hunt. People are also encouraged to check out downtown shop windows and vote for their favorite entries in the 4th of July storefront decorating competition.
Starting June 29, Visit Marshall will also be starting an America 250 medallion hunt. The public can take part by following clues posted through Visit Marshall’s social media. The finder of the medallion will win a grand prize.
The public can also learn more about the memorials at Marshall’s Memorial Park with tours that will be held June 28 and 29. Both tours will start at 4 p.m.
While the Marshall-Lyon County Library will be closed on the 4th of July, there’s still some holiday fun planned at the library July 3. The library’s Car Cinema drive-in movie will feature the film “National Treasure.” The outdoor movie will start at 9:30 p.m. in the library parking lot. Viewers will use their car radio to tune in to the audio of the movie. Space at the event may be limited to ensure viewers can see the movie screen.
On Independence Day itself, there’s a lot planned at Independence Park in Marshall leading up to live music and fireworks. Starting at 5 p.m. in the park, people can enjoy food trucks, and a “S’Mores station,” DeSmet said. The Lyon County Museum will also have a toy duck pond game, and glow necklaces and bracelets for sale. There will be face painting in the park from 6:30-8:30.
Starting at 6 p.m., the Marshall municipal band will perform at Independence Park. After the band concert, local volunteers will do a live reading of the Declaration of Independence in honor of America’s 250th anniversary, DeSmet said. More live music by rock band DRIVE will start at 7:15. The grand finale will be the annual 4th of July fireworks display at Independence Park, around 10:15.
“It’s an annual tradition that our community looks forward to every year,” DeSmet said.
Marshall has historically had its fireworks displays on the 4th, which DeSmet said has helped encourage people to come out and enjoy the festivities.
