‘Rolling in’ with unique vehicles
Shades of the Past roll-in brings classic cars downtown

MARSHALL — The cars pulling up along Marshall’s Main Street on Thursday evening ran the gamut from restored classics, to “rat rods” and even law enforcement vehicles. Getting to see that variety was part of the fun at the Shades of the Past Club’s downtown roll-in.
Jerry Kubiszewski said his 1936 Chevy truck turns a lot of heads.
“Everyone waves at me,” he said.
On Thursday, he brought the Chevy to the Marshall roll-in.
Kubiszewski and other people taking part in the roll-in shared the stories behind the vehicles they brought to show. Kubiszewski said his pickup once belonged to a local high school organization.

“It was a Tyler FFA truck,” he said. The block lettering reading ‘TYLER FFA’ is still visible on the truck doors. In the 1960s, the club traded the truck in for a newer model, he said.
When Kubiszewski bought the truck, it still had its 1966 license plates with it.
Other vehicles at the roll-in also had some unique histories. The owner of a 1942 Plymouth Special DeLuxe coupe parked along Main Street said it was likely one of the rarest cars at the roll-in. There weren’t many of the cars built before World War II started and put a halt to production.
Unlike some of the other cars at the roll-in, the Special DeLuxe on display wasn’t fully restored. It had been rescued from a drag strip, and no longer had its original engine.
“It’s a real honest-to-God hot rod,” the owner said. “I’ve worked on it, and I’ve done different things to it over the years.”

Another car with a special story was a restored Minnesota State Patrol squad car. Some of the roll-in visitors, like Ryder Callander and Peter Soupir, got a chance to sit in the back of the patrol car.
“I wouldn’t want to be in there when I get older,” Soupir said.
Kyle Helvig, who was showing the patrol car, said it was restored as a tribute to Trooper Josh Orbeck of the Minnesota State Patrol. Orbeck died from leukemia in 2017. Luke Sarnicki, of St. Augusta, Minn., restored the patrol car Orbeck originally drove as a state trooper.
“It’s painstakingly detailed,” right down to the interior, Helvig said.
Helvig said he enjoyed getting to share the vehicle with roll-in visitors, and he planned to be at the main Shades of the Past car show in June.

Getting to share vintage cars and trucks with other people was part of the fun, roll-in participants said.
“I do a lot of parades,” Kubiszewski said.
He likes seeing people’s reactions to the FFA truck.
“There was a kid in Ivanhoe, who said ‘When I grow up, I want to have a truck like that.'”
