Play, planes at Marshall YMCA Saturday

Healthy Kids Day, model airplane events planned Saturday

MARSHALL — There will be all-ages fun at the Marshall Area YMCA this weekend. On Saturday, the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day event will be going on, while at the same time the Marshall Radio Control Club will be holding its annual model airplane show.

Healthy Kids Day will offer special activities and events that are open to the public on Saturday. YMCA membership is not required to take part. The morning will start out with activities like bounce houses and games in the YMCA gymnasium, as well as open play at the new indoor playground. The active play events will be open from 9-11 a.m.

As part of Healthy Kids Day, the Marshall YMCA will offer some special music and movement classes for kids in the fitness studio. Classes start at 10 a.m. for kids ages 4 and 5, and at 10:30 a.m. for kids ages 6 and 7. During Healthy Kids Day, visitors can also stop by booths for Marshall area community organizations, and pick up information on summer programs at the YMCA.

Fans of model planes and drones can also check out the Marshall Radio Control Club’s free annual show at the YMCA on Saturday. This is the third year the club has held a show at the YMCA, said club member Vince LaPorte.

The show draws in people from South Dakota and Minnesota, who enjoy building and flying radio-controlled aircraft.

“People like to show off what they’ve built” LaPorte said.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the YMCA multipurpose room. There’s also an opportunity for visitors to try a flight simulator, or “drone games” with small electronic drones. An electric drone competition will be held at 2 p.m.

LaPorte said club members hope to be able to share the hobby of flying model airplanes with younger generations.

“We’re trying to get them out of the TV room and get them outside,” he said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
