Lyon Co. discusses Garvin Park bidding

Lyon County Commissioners discussed construction of new features like camper cabins and restrooms at Garvin Park this week.

At Tuesday’s Lyon County Board meeting, commissioners gave approval for the county environmental department to solicit bids for the project. However, there was also talk about whether the county should pursue prefabricated structures for part of the project.

Garvin Park has received state Legacy grant funds for a variety of projects, including building new camper cabins at what is now the park’s primitive campground.

“We reviewed the final draft documents that Widseth Engineering has produced for the construction project, and we are looking forward to bidding this,” Lyon County Environmental Administrator Roger Schroeder said at Tuesday’s meeting.

Schroeder said the completed documents and construction specifications were not complete, but were expected to be finished soon. Schroeder said he wanted to ask commissioners this week for their approval to go out for construction bids, to so the county could start advertising for bids sooner.

Commissioners asked Schroeder whether the county would be looking at bid options for a pre-fabricated restroom building as part of the construction projet.

“My preference has been to build it on-site,” Schroeder said. He said building on-site could “sweeten the pot” for construction of camper cabins at Garvin Park. A pre-fabricated building could also require a more robust foundation, which could be costly, he said.

However, Schroeder said, if commissioners wanted to go with pre-fab structures, he would be amenable to it.

Commissioner Gary Crowley moved to allow the county environmental department to go out for bids on the Garvin Park project, and direct Schroeder to look into the cost of a prefabricated restroom versus a restroom built on-site. Commissioners voted in favor of the proposal.

Starting at $3.95/week.
