Cottonwood seeks congressional spending for infrastructure

Lyon Co. Commissioners vote to support city's request

The city of Cottonwood is trying again to get congressionally-directed Spending for needed sewer and water main work along Cottonwood’s Main Street. On Tuesday, Lyon County Commissioners voted to sign a pair of letters of support for the request, which would go to U.S. senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith.

“Teather (Bliss) from the city had reached out to me to ask for the board’s support,” said Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg. The request the city of Cottonwood was making was for $5 million in Congressional spending. Cottonwood is facing a total $28 million in infrastructure updates, the request said.

Tuesday marked the second time that the city of Cottonwood had approached Lyon County commissioners about supporting Cottonwood’s application for Congressionally Directed Spending. Bliss, the city administrator, asked for support for a $5 million spending request in April, as well.

Last year, Bliss said the request was “a long shot.” If Cottonwood received congressionally-directed spending, it would help with projects that would need to move forward no matter what. Cottonwood was facing a total of $28 million in infrastructure updates, that would make needed repairs to the city’s water and sewer mains, Bliss said.

Bliss wasn’t present at this week’s commissioner meeting. County commissioners did have some questions about the new $5 million request.

“Is this the same one that they requested before? I thought we did one already for that,” said Commissioner Gary Crowley.

“It might have been last year’s congressionally directed-spending. Because this is an every year thing,” said Commissioner Rick Anderson.

Commissioners did vote unanimously to give their support for the spending request.

Starting at $3.95/week.
