An icy start to the weekend
Second round of wintry mix coming Thurs. into Fri.
MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota saw some rainy and icy conditions on Thursday, which led to some school closures and canceled events in the area. However, wintry weather isn’t over yet – on Thursday, National Weather Service forecasts said another round of icy conditions is possible into Friday morning.
Local storm reports on the National Weather Service website said about a tenth of an inch of ice had accumulated in parts of the Marshall area on Thursday. Reports from Ivanhoe and Tracy said there was about a tenth of an inch of ice on trees, parked vehicles and other surfaces, but roads were wet instead of icy.
By 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the Minnesota State Patrol reported that it had responded to two property damage crashes in its Marshall district.
A lot of southwest Minnesota, including Yellow Medicine, Lincoln, Lyon, Redwood, Pipestone, Murray and Cottonwood Counties, will be in a winter weather advisory until 7 a.m. Saturday. The NWS said mixed precipitation is expected, with total snow accumulations of up to two inches and up to two-tenths of an inch of ice.
The National Weather Service said a second round of wintry precipitation would move across the region Thursday night into Friday afternoon. There would likely by a bigger risk of ice or freezing rain on Friday morning, with anywhere from a glaze of ice to a tenth of an inch of ice possible. The NWS said there was also a chance for up to a quarter-inch of ice to form in areas along parts of U.S. Highway 14.
The amount of ice the region gets will be affected by temperature, the NWS said. If temperatures dropped into the 20s, there would be a bigger potential for ice impacts. If temperatures are warmer, or if there is more sleet, it will help limit the impact of freezing rain, the NWS said.
On Saturday, snow showers will be possible in the region, the NWS said.
In Marshall, sunnier conditions are in the forecast from Sunday into early next week, according to the NWS. Daytime temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s until Wednesday, when things warm back up to the 60s.
