MARSHALL — The Southwest Figure Skating Club is celebrating a special year, and will be hosting its annual ice show next week for its 30th anniversary. This year’s show surrounds the theme of Blades & Beats, and will honor past and current skaters of the club while inspiring the future.
Special to the show this year will be a large reunion number, where over 20 alumni skaters of the club will be coming back to hit the ice one more for a group performance.
“The coolest part about it all is we have an alumni number. We have skaters from the last 30 years coming back,” club director Jodi Schreurs said. “For me, that’s like the biggest compliment I could get from coaching. That they (alum) love being here and coming back, and it brings good memories.”
There will also be a slideshow prepared and presented during the show that will showcase photos from the club’s history, adding to the day’s meaning.
“I think it’s super cute and it’s sweet. I left the club later in middle school to do gymnastics, and then I came back to be a coach, and it’s the same club. It’s so fun. All the little girls are so cute and getting to see old skaters is also so fun,” skater and coach Mikayla Chesley said. “This is a reunion show … I am looking forward to the alumni number and to seeing everyone.”

Fellow skater and coach Miranda Doose also said she’s excited to reunite with past skaters, particularly with those she grew up watching.
The Blades & Beats theme will also host a variety of music and genres, as a collection of several members’ favorite songs.
“There’s so many favorite songs. I had the coaches pick a favorite song for the show, so everyone had a favorite song that we could just put in there,” Schreurs said. “I think (people) can expect really good music. Lots of nostalgia, like pictures and old show themes that will be displayed … A lot of togetherness and a little bit more of a ‘home’ feeling.”
Prior to hitting the ice for a rehearsal practice last week, a group of current skaters collectively expressed their excitement about this year’s show regarding their solos and other duet and group numbers.
Jaeda Nelson, Avery Pochardt, Aria Larson, Alayna Gruhot, Delanie Harnack and Madison Gehrke said they are all looking forward to seeing the alumni number and enjoy the variety of music. They also noted that there’s some meaningful performances, like skating to a family member’s favorite song and are also excited to portray some moves that they don’t always get to do at competitions.

The Southwest Figure Skating Club has one lone senior this season in Evea Powers from Marshall High School.
Unique to this year’s show as well is a sports number, that the group of skaters also said is another favorite, where some skaters are inviting a friend from a high school that plays any sport to come on the ice.
Schreurs said she’s excited for that performance as well, and said there are some cross country runners or basketball players committed already.
“Another thing about the show that is pretty cool is we have two guest skaters, which we have never had. They are actually from the Watertown South Dakota Skating Club,” Schreurs said. “What’s unique about them is one is a high school girl, but then the other one is her foreign exchange student sister, like their host family, for a figure skater from Germany.”
Schreurs said she saw the two at a competition in Watertown, and was impressed by them and got in contact to see if they’d participate in the ice show, to which they accepted the invite. They will each perform a solo.

There will be a mix of performances between solos, duets and groups, with over 70 skaters including the alumni included in the show this year.
“I love the theme. Like all the great songs … But, the little kids, because we all have numbers that we coach, I’m really excited to watch the little numbers that I coach, and then get to see the numbers that they (other coaches) coach,” Chesley said. “That’s always fun to see all the different choreography, and see all the little kids with their smiles and having fun.”
Chesley also said that the club is always welcoming new members, citing that it’s “like a dance recital on ice.”
The ice show will take place next Saturday on March 14 with two showtimes of noon and 7 p.m. at the Red Baron Arena in Marshall. Tickets are available for purchase at the door, $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 years old and under, and free for those three and under.
“It’s a fun show. It’s fun for the kids, it’s fun for the adults, it’s fun for the parents and the coaches,” Chesley said. “Everyone should come and give our skaters some love. They have worked really hard and they deserve to be showcased.”
