Rural Redwood Falls man faces four felonies

RENVILLE COUNTY — A 64-year-old rural Redwood Falls man was arrested Feb. 27 in Franklin following a high-speed chase that ended after the use of tire deflation devices.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a Feb. 27 report from Renville County Probation that a client, Thomas Earl McDonald was threatening to kill his probation officer, according to a Renville County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The Renville County Attorney’s Office outlined the allegations in a criminal complaint that resulted in an arrest warrant being issued by Renville County District Court.

Later that day, the Renville and Sibley County Sheriff’s Offices located McDonald driving a vehicle in Sibley County and attempted to stop him. McDonald led deputies on a 13-mile, high-speed pursuit including speeds of more than 100 miles per hour that ended in Franklin, after tire deflation devices were used. McDonald refused to exit his vehicle despite multiple commands and warnings.

Several deputies, officers and a Renville County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit were used to take McDonald into custody. He was transported to the Olivia Hospital & Clinic where he was treated for a dog bite.

Assisting agencies included the Sibley and Redwood County County Sheriff’s Offices, Fairfax Police and the Minnesota State Patrol.

McDonald is being held in the Renville County Jail. He faces four felony charges in three cases including threats of violence file Feb. 27, plus fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, first-degree burglary and threats of violence, filed March 2. Bail was set at $1 million bail or bond without conditions. A court hearing was set for 2:30 p.m., March 6.
