In January, Boulder Estates Executive Director Jim Knudson first got the news that he would be receiving a statewide leadership award. On Feb. 10, Knudson formally received LeadingAge Minnesota’s 2026 Outstanding Leadership Award.

“Jim is widely respected for his open-door leadership style and his ability to build authentic relationships at every level of the organization,” LeadingAge Minnesota and Boulder Estates said in a news release. “He mentors emerging leaders, supports staff through both challenges and successes, and consistently prioritizes dignity and quality of life for residents. His leadership has shaped a culture where people feel seen, valued, and supported — a legacy that continues to influence the broader aging services community.”

The release said Knudson was chosen for the award out of more than 3,400 licensed directors across Minnesota. LeadingAge Minnesota is a statewide network of caregivers and organizations serving older adults. The organization has several different awards that are presented during its annual Institute and Expo. According to LeadingAge Minnesota, the Outstanding Leadership Award is one that honors a person who demonstrates leadership through vision, servanthood, mentoring others, and commitment to older adults.

Boulder Estates residents and staff surprised Knudson with their own recognition ceremony, during a tenant council meeting in January. Boulder Creek Assisted Living Director Jan Mason said the work to nominate Knudson for the award started last spring. Part of the nomination process included sharing a story that illustrated Knudson’s leadership in action, and getting letters of support.

Knudson has been with Boulder Estates since the facility opened in 1998.
