Five dead in crash on U.S. 71
WINDOM — Five people were killed and eight injured in a head-on crash Friday in Cottonwood County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The crash involved a 2016 GMC Terrain and a 2019 Ford Transit Van carrying 12 passengers.
The crash was reported at 4:42 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 71 and 240th Street, between Sanborn and Windom. The GMC, driven by Martin Nicklolas Hanson, 67, of Springfield, was northbound on Highway 71, and the van, driven by Matthew Arthur Schultz, 42, of Lakefield, was southbound when the vehicles collided, the State Patrol said.
Hanson was killed in the crash, the State Patrol said. A total of four passengers in the van, including Kelly Christine Hargus, 49, of Jackson, Kathleen Ann Johnson, 73, of Jackson, Richard Warren Johnson, 73, of Jackson, and Lindsey Kay Rossow, 47, of Lakefield, also died, the State Patrol said.
Schultz was taken to the Windom hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.
Other passengers in the van were also injured. Kassandra Lynn Ambrose, 44, of Jackson, was transported to the Redwood Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries. Eric Charles Rossow, 54, of Lakefield, was flown to Sanford Sioux Falls with life-threatening injuries.
Passengers Nolan Eric Ambrose, 19, of Jackson, Andria Elizabeth Benson, 20, of Jackson, Kristin Kathleen Hanson, 44, of Jackson, Brett Eric Rossow, 20, of Jackson, Karlee Kristine Rossow, 23, of Lakefield, and Keylee Kathleen Rossow, 25, of Lakefield all received non life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.
The Cottonwood and Redwood County Sheriff’s Offices, the Sanborn Fire Department, Windom, Lamberton, Westbrook and Springfield Ambulances, and North Memorial Air Care all responded at the crash scene.
