Ice fishing tradition continues on Lake Hendricks

HENDRICKS — For decades, ice fishing has brought people together on Lake Hendricks. Organizers of the annual Hendricks ice fishing derby say things are looking good to continue the tradition this weekend.

“We’re hoping for a really good turnout,” said Greg Pearson of the Lake Hendricks Improvement Association. With a mild weather forecast for this weekend, organizers are anticipating hundreds of people on the lake. Plus, Pearson said, “The fishing has been really good.” The walleye and perch have been biting, he said.

Pearson said this year is the 48th annual ice fishing derby on Lake Hendricks. Pearson said he could think of only two years when the event was canceled.

The forecast this week is relatively mild for February, with temperatures predicted to get into the 30s on Saturday. In spite of the heat wave, Pearson said ice conditions on the lake have been good.

“We have about 20 inches of ice on the lake,” he said. However, it is still anglers’ responsibility to check ice thickness.

The one big preparation for the derby has been to clear a driving path out to the derby area, past an area with some ice heaves, Pearson said.

The Hendricks fishing derby has prizes for big fish in three categories. In addition to walleyes and perch, anglers can also claim prizes for northern pike. There will also be special events for children age 12 and younger.

Organizers have moved the event headquarters to the Lake Hendricks campground this year, and that will be where anglers can access the lake. Pearson said Pipestone Systems will be holding a hog roast at the campground, and people can get pork sandwiches for a freewill donation.

The fishing derby will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The awards ceremony will follow, at 3:15 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
