Ice conditions cancel Hendricks fishing derby
New indoor event planned March 28
HENDRICKS — Changing weather and unsafe ice conditions led the Lake Hendricks Improvement Association to cancel the annual ice fishing derby planned for Saturday.
Instead of having the derby this year, the LHIA will hold a new event, the Indoor Fishing Bingo Banquet, on March 28.
“We’re still going to do everything, it’s just going to be indoors,” said Greg Pearson, of the LHIA. The event will include a meal, raffle drawings for derby prizes, and bingo.
Pearson said the LHIA made the decision to cancel the fishing derby based on observing conditions on Lake Hendricks. Recent warmer weather left water on the surface of the frozen lake. The water, anticipated vehicle traffic during the derby, and a forecast of gusting winds on Saturday could combine to make risky conditions for anglers, he said.
Pearson said this would be the third cancellation in the fishing derby’s history. “We’ve never had it happen this close” to the event before, he said.
Derby organizers opted to shift gears, Pearson said. The Bingo Banquet will be an indoor event that features a pork sandwich and chili meal, bingo games with multiple prizes and kids’ games.
The Bingo Banquet will start at 5 p.m. on March 28, at the Hendricks Fire Hall.
