Bluepeak announces $35 million fiber expansion in MN
MARSHALL — A high-speed internet provider in southwest Minnesota announced this week that it will be making some significant expansions to its network.
In a Thursday news release, Bluepeak said it is planning a major fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) expansion. In a $35 million project, the company will overbuild its existing broadband infrastructure, and expand FTTH connectivity, the news release said.
“We’re proud to continue our investment of expanding access of reliable, high-speed internet to Minnesota residents,” said Rich Fish, CEO of Bluepeak. “This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the region and its growth.”
Bluepeak serves communities in Minnesota, Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Texas and Wyoming.
In the news release, Bluepeak spokespeople said the provider has worked to strengthen its regional network infrastructure by expanding backbone capacity, upgrading key network components, and enhancing reliability in Minnesota. When the FTTH expansion is complete, homes and businesses will have faster internet speeds and greater reliability, Bluepeak said. The news release said Bluepeak’s fiber-optic network will deliver speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second for residential customers, and up to 10 gigabits per second for businesses.
Bluepeak spokespeople didn’t have detailed information yet on when or where in southwest Minnesota the expansion is planned to start. The construction timelines vary by community, spokespeople said. Factors like engineering, permitting and coordination with local partners all play a role in construction timelines.
Bluepeak will share local updates as plans are finalized, so residents can have advance notice before the expansion work begins, spokespeople said.
As Bluepeak expands its fiber network, neighborhoods will be upgraded in phases as construction is completed, Bluepeak spokespeople said. When fiber becomes available in an area, existing customers will have the opportunity to transition to Bluepeak’s fiber service.
Bluepeak said more specific information on the upgrade processes will also be communicated locally as the work goes on.
