Marshall senior’s scholarship to MIT highlights Tiger Spotlight

MARSHALL — Marshall High School senior Nouh Dahir has earned a full scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to highlight January’s session of Tiger Spotlight at Tuesday night’s Marshall School Board meeting.

The board recognizes a “Student of the Month” from each district school site in its monthly tradition of Tiger Spotlight. Students are nominated by teachers and faculty, and are presented with a certificate at the meeting.

Dahir was nominated by the high school for his recent admission into the prestigious MIT.

“We are proud to recognize Nouh Dahir, a Marshall High School senior, for his incredible achievement in earning admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a full four-year Match Scholarship through the QuestBridge National College Match program. Nouh’s dedication to academic excellence, leadership, and perseverance has set a remarkable example for his peers and reflects the best of our Tiger community,” his award description stated. “This prestigious scholarship is awarded to only 2,550 finalists nationwide, and Nouh’s success demonstrates his hard work and commitment to his future. We celebrate Nouh’s outstanding accomplishment and look forward to the amazing contributions he will make at MIT and beyond.”

Johnny Martell-Lozano was chosen as the Area Learning Center’s (ALC) student of the month by Donna Bastemeyer.

“Johnny has shown incredible growth since his first day at the ALC, both academically and personally. He is hard-working, inquisitive, kind and thoughtful,” Bastemeyer said. “He consistently puts effort into improving his work. Johnny makes a genuine effort to reach out to others, ensuring that everyone feels included and respected. He treats others with kindness and communicates in a respectful, positive way.”

Amy Barker nominated Madison Nguyen from Park Side for this month’s Tiger Spotlight.

“Madison is an exceptional writer who approaches each piece with care and intention. She thoughtfully develops her ideas, taking the time to plan her stories and ensure they are fully expressed on paper,” Barker said. “Her writing consistently meets the highest standards, demonstrating correct capitalization, appropriate spacing between words and accurate punctuation. Madison’s handwriting is exemplary — Among the strongest I have observed at the first-grade level — And reflects her diligence in forming each letter with precision. Over the course of this year, Madison has shown remarkable growth in her writing skills, and I am incredibly proud of her progress.”

Southview’s honored student was Eden Lor, nominated by Theresa Leek.

“Eden exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding student through her dedication and hard work. Every day, she demonstrates a strong commitment to her studies, striving to achieve her best in all tasks and assignments,” Leek said. “Eden’s kindness and friendly nature make her a pleasure to work with, as she consistently shows respect and empathy towards her peers. Her positive attitude is infectious, creating a welcoming environment for everyone around her. Eden’s ability to help others feel valued and included further enhances her reputation as a remarkable student. Her diligent efforts and friendly demeanor contribute significantly to the positive atmosphere in the classroom.”

For Marshall Middle School, Scott Midtaune selected Aleck Lawrenz for the recognition.

“Aleck is being chosen to be recognized for this award because of his effort and attitude in and out of the classroom. In the classroom, Aleck is always willing to participate in classroom discussions, help other students as needed, and tries his best on every activity,” Midtaune said. “Outside of the classroom, Aleck is continually showing great Tiger Traits, while also being a good friend and role model for his peers. Aleck is one who, no matter what the situation is, he keeps a positive attitude.”

The Tiger Spotlight will continue on each month for the remainder of the school year, honoring students from each district school.
