Learning about ‘Schools Long Ago’

Students at Park Side Elementary took a look back at what school time was like for kids in the past, during special classroom visits Friday. Lyon County Museum director Jennifer Andries brought in artifacts to show students, like a kitten ball — a kind of softball — and a softball glove. Learning about historical events is part of the social studies curriculum for Park Side students, said teacher Jamie Brigger. “We’ve always done ‘Schools Long Ago,'” Brigger said. In the past, students used to go on field trips to the old one-room schoolhouse outside the former West Side Elementary, she said. For the past couple of years, Park Side has invited the Lyon County Historical Society to bring artifacts to share with children. “They love it,” Brigger said. Students get a chance to get up close to parts of history they normally wouldn’t get to see.
