Board approves Lyon Co. fee schedule

Fuel fees among areas of discussion

MARSHALL — Fuel costs were part of the discussion about Lyon County’s 2026 fee schedule this week. Before approving 2026 fees, the commissioners’ consensus was to increase the overhead for area agencies to purchase fuel from the county by 10 cents per gallon.

The county fee schedule sets the costs for different services provided by the county, from fees for copying documents, to landfill tipping fees and the cost of liquor and tobacco licenses. At Tuesday’s county board meeting, commissioners went over the proposed fees for different county departments.

One area that prompted some discussion from commissioners was purchases from the county’s fuel system. Materials included in the county board agenda for Tuesday’s meeting said purchasers like the city of Marshall, the Marshall-Lyon County Library, Southwest Health and Human Services and United Community Action Partnership pay the cost of gas or diesel fuel plus 5 cents per gallon overhead.

“We’ve been at a nickel a gallon for as long as I can remember. I know there’s been some discussion about raising that,” said Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg. “I know this has been a discussion over the past summer for sure.”

Commissioner Todd Draper shared additional information about fuel purchases. The top purchaser of fuel from the county was UCAP, followed by the city of Marshall, the Lyon County highway department and the Sheriff’s Office.

Draper also noted that the county’s fuel systems were aging, and they could be dealing with the costs of replacing them in the future.

“I don’t think we’re out of line” to increase the fuel fees, said Commissioner Rick Anderson. However, Anderson and other commissioners talked about whether it would be better to raise the fees gradually.

Commissioner consensus was to raise the overhead to 15 cents per gallon.

Commissioners also discussed contracted fees, like the costs to house inmates from other counties in the Lyon County Jail. However, instead of making changes to those fees, commissioner consensus was to talk about it in more depth later this year.

At the end of the discussion, commissioners voted to approve an amended fee schedule for 2026.

Starting at $3.95/week.
