Snowy holiday weekend disrupts traffic

Snowfall totals of about 5 inches reported in Marshall area

MARSHALL — Thanksgiving weekend was a wintry one, thanks to a slow-moving storm that blanketed the region in about 4 to 6 inches of snow. Snowfall totals varied around the Marshall area, with the city of Marshall reporting 5 inches over Friday and Saturday.

Looking ahead, southwest Minnesota will be dealing less with snow than with frigid temperatures, said National Weather Service technician Tim Masters.

“The big feature of the weather this week is the cold,” Masters said Monday. Temperatures are forecast to drop well below zero Wednesday night.

Local snowfall reports for the Thanksgiving weekend varied, according to the National Weather Service. Snow started falling Friday evening in Marshall, and by Sunday morning the city had received about 5 inches, according to a local report. Snowfall seemed to be a little lighter in some areas west of Marshall. A report from the Ivanhoe area said about 3.6 inches of snow fell there over the weekend. Heavier snowfall totals were reported further south and east in Minnesota. New Ulm received from 6.4 inches to 7.5 inches of snow over the 48-hour period, the NWS reported.

The snow caused problems for holiday travel, according to reports from the Minnesota State Patrol. In the 13-county State Patrol district that includes Lyon County, a total of 27 vehicles went off the road between Friday and Sunday, said State Patrol information officer Sgt. Troy Christianson. In the same time period, there were also 13 property damage crashes in the district, and one report of a jackknifed semi truck, Christianson said.

Statewide, the State Patrol reported 572 property damage crashes and 42 crashes with injuries over the weekend, Christianson said. More than 450 vehicles went off the road, and there were a total of 13 jackknifed semis.

It’s possible that southwest Minnesota could get a little more snow later this week, but not like the Thanksgiving weekend storm.

“Any snow this week is kind of going to be spotty,” Masters said. There is a 30% chance of snow Tuesday night in the Marshall area, with a slight chance of freezing rain. Then, on Friday night and Saturday, there’s another chance of light snow, he said.

Area residents should be prepared for cold temperatures this week, especially on Wednesday, Masters said. Forecasts say the daytime high will only reach 15 degrees on Wednesday, and nighttime lows will fall below zero. Temperatures could get down to around -12 degrees Wednesday night, Masters said.

The NWS is also forecasting subzero wind chills Wednesday night into Thursday morning. People are encouraged to dress for the cold, stay indoors if possible, and check their car batteries.
