Homeowners and renters encouraged to apply for EAP funds

NEW ULM — Eligible renters and homeowners are encouraged to apply for Federal Energy Assistance Program (EAP) funding released Dec. 1, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

The free program provides an average benefit of about $550, plus support to respond to emergencies.

The Minnesota Commerce Department reported $112.7 million in federal funds have been released to the EAP program. Funds were delayed a month due to the recent federal government shutdown.

Eligibility is based on income and household size. A family of four could earn up to $71,999 annually and qualify to receive financial assistance with energy bills.

Energy bill payments are sent directly to the household energy company or to a provider of fuel including propane, fuel oil, or wood. Initial benefits can be up to $1,400, depending on household income and fuel costs.

Funding provides money to help with heating bill payments, individuals facing a utility disconnect or repairs/replacement of unsafe and non-functioning heating systems.

Brown County’s EAP is operated by the Minnesota Valley Action Council (MVAC).

Amanda Mackie, MVAC executive director, said last year, 634 Brown County households received energy assistance. About 150 households faced a utility disconnect and 17 used funds to replace a furnace or water heater.

“That’s a pretty typical year. We didn’t have a super cold winter last year,” said Mackie. “The most important step Minnesotans can take is to apply now, so they’re in the system, ready to receive help.”

Minnesota has a cold weather rule that offers protection from utility shutoffs. It requires households to set up and follow a payment plan, which can be challenging without energy assistance.

Last year, the EAP supported more than 125,000 Minnesota households. Nearly 75% of served households included seniors, people with disabilities, or children under age six.
