Fatal fire under investigation in Westbrook
WESTBROOK — One person is dead after a structure fire reported in rural Westbrook over the weekend, the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office said Lance Richard Larson, 36, was pronounced dead at the fire scene.
The incident is under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Cottonwood County dispatch received an emergency call for a structure fire at a rural Westbrook address around 3:04 p.m. Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The caller said she was in the house, and her son and his father were in the garage, when they heard an explosion in a shop building. The adult male ran into the shop, but didn’t come back out, the news release said.
The shop building was fully engulfed by fire when responders arrived at the scene, and firefighters were initially unable to get inside the building, the Sheriff’s Office said. Westbrook Fire requested mutual aid from other fire departments.
Larson was located inside the shop building, and was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.
In addition to the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office and Westbrook Fire and Ambulance, the Fulda Fire Department, Storden Fire and First Responders, Dovray Fire Department, the Minnesota DNR and the State Fire Marshal’s Office all responded at the scene.
