Conditional bail set at $5M for Hanska double homicide suspect

NEW ULM — The bail for Randy Thomas Zimmerman was set at $5 million with conditions and $10 million without conditions during a remote hearing held in Brown County Court on Tuesday

Zimmerman stands charged with the second-degree murder of Justin Reinarts and Tabitha Trescott on Sunday, Nov. 2. The charges carry a maximum of 40 years in prison if convicted.

Brown County Attorney Charles Hanson informed Judge Robert Docherty that he was requesting a higher bail amount than normal for the second-degree murder charges. Hanson said the court considered Zimmerman a flight risk and the severity of the alleged offense warranted a higher bail.

Zimmerman is charged with breaking into Justin Reinarts’ Hanska home and shooting him while he slept and then shooting and killing Trescott. After allegedly committing the murders, he fled to Iowa and was apprehended by law enforcement. He is also alleged to have fired on law enforcement before his apprehension.

Hanson argued Zimmerman remained a threat to public safety based on these alleged actions. For this reason, he recommended $10 million unconditional bail and $5 million with conditions.

Defense attorney Gregory Lee Handevidt said he and his client understood the elevated nature of the charges, but argued that Zimmerman’s financial situation prevented him from posting bail. He recommended unconditional bail be set at $5 million and $1 million with conditions.

Judge Docherty ruled in favor of the higher bail. He said Zimmerman is charged with committing two murders and according to the complaint, after allegedly committing the murders, Zimmerman pointed a long gun at a juvenile witness and ordered him back into his room.

Docherty also acknowledged Zimmerman fled to Iowa and allegedly fired on officers as they tried to apprehend him. Based on the extreme nature of the case, Docherty agreed with prosecutors that Zimmerman remained a potential threat to public safety and a flight risk.

He set unconditional bail at $10 million and conditional bail at $5 million. The $5 million conditional bail would require Zimmerman to wear a GPS monitor at all times. In addition, he would need to surrender all firearms and dangerous weapons to law enforcement and could not live at a residence where others possess firearms. Alcohol and controlled substances would be off limits and he would be subject to random testing by a probation officer. Zimmerman would be required to make all future court dates. Zimmerman is also prohibited from contacting the family of his alleged victims or any witnesses.

Zimmerman’s next court appearance will be at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 25.

Starting at $3.95/week.
