Communities offering Veterans Day programs
Veterans Day is coming up Tuesday, and southwest Minnesota communities are honoring U.S. military service members with guest speakers, music and other events.
In Marshall, a program is planned at the Adult Community Center downtown, and residents of Hill Street Place and Boulder Estates will also be holding Veterans Day observances.
Hill Street Place residents will hold a Veterans Day program at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A community Veterans Day program will start at 10:30 at the ACC. This year’s program will feature veteran Jes Mellenthin as the guest speaker, said Bruce Fuhrmann, of the Marshall American Legion Post.
The Veterans Day program at Boulder Estates will be in the afternoon on Tuesday, in the dining room.
Around the area, Veterans Day programs are being held in local communities, and often including students at local schools. Below is a list of some of the programs being held around the Marshall area on Tuesday:
Balaton
Breakfast for veterans and their families will be served from 8-10:30 a.m. at Balaton One Stop. The meal will be provided by Balaton One Stop and the Stone and Groeneweg American Legion Post #237 in Balaton.
A program will be presented at the Balaton Community Center at 11 a.m. The guest speaker will be Mike Schaffer, a past state commander of the American Legion, and a member of the Currie American Legion post.
Canby
A Veterans Day program will be held at 10 a.m. at Canby High School. The guest speaker will be Bill Palmer.
Cottonwood
A program will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Lakeview School. The keynote speaker will be Lac qui Parle County Veterans Services Officer Josh Beninga.
Granite Falls
Students from the Yellow Medicine East school district and the Fagen Fighters World War II Museum will be holding a Veterans Day program at 1:30 p.m., at the museum. The program will include music from the YME concert band and choir. The keynote speaker will be Master Sgt. Erik Hoklin. Hoklin has had past deployments with the National Guard, and is also a social studies teacher at YME.
Space at the program is limited.
Hendricks
A program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Hendricks School gymnasium.
Ivanhoe
A community Veterans Day program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Lincoln Elementary gymnasium.
Lynd
A program will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Lynd Public School.
Minneota
A few different programs will be held in Minneota on Veterans Day. At 11 a.m., a program will be held at Minneota High School. St. Edward School in Minneota will also have a Veterans Day program at 12:45 p.m.. At 2 p.m., a flag retirement ceremony will be held behind the American Legion building in Minneota.
Tracy
A program will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tracy Area High School gymnasium.
Tyler
A Veterans Day program will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Knights Gymnasium at RTR School in Tyler.
Wabasso
A program will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the District 640 Activity Center.
Walnut Grove
A program will be held at 2 p.m. at Westbrook-Walnut Grove Elementary.
Westbrook
A Veterans Day program will be held at 10:15 a.m. at Westbrook-Walnut Grove High School.
