Spooky fun at Garvin’s Halloween Trail
GARVIN PARK — Halloween is getting closer — and organizers are getting ready to open the annual Halloween Trail at Garvin Park. The family-friendly trail event kicks off tonight at 5 p.m.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Brooke Kor, Lyon County parks programming manager. “Every year, we’ve changed things and added things.”
Kor said the Halloween Trail will feature a scavenger hunt with clues that visitors can follow along a roughly one-mile trail. Different displays and even some costumed volunteers will be waiting on the way. The Lingen Dairy food truck will also be at the park for visitors who worked up an appetite walking the trail.
Kor said organizers have tried to bring something new every time the Halloween Trail returns. The trail has even switched routes a couple of times to accommodate visitors. This year, the trail is more accessible, and Garvin Park will have a Trackchair available for visitors, Kor said.
Children at the Halloween Trail must be accompanied by an adult. Kor recommended that families looking for a less-spooky experience visit the trail from about 5- 6:30 p.m., when it’s still light out.
“Once it’s dark, obviously everything in the dark is a little scarier,” she said.
Preparations for the Halloween Trail have been building, Kor said.
“It takes close to a week to get it ready,” she said. Different decorations are planned and built to go with the clues in this year’s scavenger hunt. Work to actually set up the trail is dependent on the weather, she said.
The event has grown over the past several years, Kor said. Last year, organizers counted around 1,900 people visiting the Halloween Trail.
The Halloween Trail is also a chance for people to enjoy other features of Garvin Park, Kor said. The beginning of the trail is near the park’s main playground and picnic shelter. That gives kids and families more to do, as well as a spot to enjoy some food.
“It’s neat to see the whole park being utilized,” she said.
The Halloween Trail event will run from 5-8 p.m. today and Saturday at Garvin Park.
