New heat records set
MARSHALL — Marshall set new records for high temperatures over the weekend. According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Marshall had daytime highs of 90 degrees or higher on both Saturday and Sunday.
The high temperature observed in Marshall on Saturday was 91 degrees, which edged out the previous record high for Oct. 4 by a couple of degrees, NOAA data said. The previous record, set in 2018, was 89 degrees.
Daytime temperatures also reached a high of 90 degrees on Sunday, NOAA data said. That was also a new record.
Normally, temperatures for early October are in the high 60s, NOAA data said.
NOAA data showed that Marshall was not the only city in the region experiencing some record heat over the weekend. On Sunday, temperatures of 89 degrees were recorded near Worthington, which was a new record high. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota, area observed high temperatures of 91 degrees on Friday, setting a new temperature record for Oct. 3.
The National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls said factors like high pressure in the atmosphere and low humidity contributed to the weekend heat wave. In dry conditions, the sun is able to heat up the ground faster.
The NWS said a cold front is moving in this week, which will lead to more seasonable weather for October. This week, the forecast in Marshall is for sunny and breezy conditions, with temperatures into the 70s. There are chances of showers Saturday night and Sunday.
