Area Halloween celebrations kick off Saturday

MARSHALL — Halloween is still a week away, but the festivities are already starting up for trick-or-treaters. A variety of family-friendly events are planned for Saturday, including returning favorites like ResHALLoween at Southwest Minnesota State University, and trick-or-treating at downtown Marshall businesses.

Organizers said a total of 17 local businesses are participating in the downtown trick-or-treat event. It worked out well to hold the event the weekend before Halloween, said Sam Lund, events specialist with the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce. “It kind of spreads out the events in Marshall,” he said. There are still a variety of Halloween trick-or-treating events planned in Marshall on Oct. 31.

At the same time, Lund said, the downtown event paired well together with events like the Lyon County Museum’s Family Fun Day, which is also on Saturday. The museum event overlaps with downtown trick-or-treating, so families can stop by for additional treats and activities like crafts and a pumpkin scavenger hunt.

After events wrap up downtown, the trick-or-treating action in Marshall will move to the campus of SMSU. ResHALLoween starts up Saturday afternoon, and gives kids a chance to trick-or-treat through themed stops at the residence halls.
