MARSHALL — Steph Myhre and her daughter Kelly Myhre already have some experience in the flower business. For the past few years, Kelly has been growing and selling plants and flowers, and even doing floral arrangements.

This fall, the Myhres took the next step — opening their own store.

“It’s a new adventure,” Steph Myhre said.

“It’s been fun,” Kelly Myhre said.

Third Street Floral opened in downtown Marshall in September. The floral, gift and home goods shop is located in the former Rustic Hideaway Boutique space.

“When the building was available for rent, we decided to try it,” Steph Myhre said. She said their other family members were also very encouraging of the business idea.

Kelly Myhre said she is a homeschool student, and is close to finishing high school. She’s been growing plants for about five years, and that turned into a traveling business. She’s also expanded into doing floral arrangements and bouquets.

As Kelly talked with an Independent reporter on Thursday, she trimmed and arranged greenery and flowers in vases.

“I usually start with greenery,” she explained as she worked on an arrangement. “Then, I pick about three flowers that I like.” After adding the main flowers in the arrangement, she added in smaller blooms and other plants.

Third Street Floral does floral arrangements for weddings, funerals and special events, as well as daily bouqets, the Myhres said. They also do floral deliveries in Marshall.

But floral arrangements aren’t the only things available at Third Street Floral.

In planning out the store, “You’ve got to have more than just the flowers,” Steph Myhre said. Third Street Floral has items like stationery, baby gifts and toys, décor and more. Some of the items at the store were made by southwest Minnesota artists and businesses, she said.

Turning the former boutique space into a floral and gift shop didn’t take a lot of renovation. But the Myhres did bring in a florist’s cooler, and decorate it to fit in with the rest of the shop, Steph said.

So far, a lot of customer response at Third Street Floral has been through social media, foot traffic downtown, or word-of- mouth, the Myhres said.

“I think my dad and my brother have been the biggest advertisers for us,” Kelly Myhre said.

“It’s been fun to get to know the community and people, Steph Myhre said of opening the shop. “We’ve been happy with the way the community has been supportive.”

It was also exciting to open the store in the fall, the Myhres said. They were looking forward to working during the holiday season.

“You get the people downtown for the holidays,” Kelly Myhre said.
