Saratoga re-opens as construction continues
4th St./College Drive intersection to close Monday
MARSHALL — Drivers will need to be aware of some crossing changes as construction on Highway 19 in Marshall continues, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said this week. On Friday afternoon, the intersection of Highway 19 (West College Drive) and Saratoga Street reopened to traffic, while the West College Drive/South 4th Street intersection will be closed starting Monday.
The South 4th Street intersection is expected to be closed for the next few weeks.
MnDOT and R and G Construction representatives said that, while the College Drive/Saratoga intersection will be open, it will have a flashing red traffic signal. Drivers will need to stop before going through the intersection.
Construction on Highway 19 has been going on in a total of four stages this summer, in an area between Fairgrounds Road and Main Street. The MnDOT project is replacing the current road surface with concrete, putting in new underground utility lines, and building a roundabout near the National Guard Armory in Marshall.
The first stage of the project, located roughly between Fairgrounds Road and the bridge near Legion Field Park, is getting close to its end. MnDOT said this week that permanent pavement markings are being put in on the new roadway. On the second stage, located between Main Street and North Greeley Street, pavement markings are also being installed at the Saratoga Street intersection. Crews are also working to finish street lighting and signal systems, MnDOT said.
The third stage of the project, which runs from South Fourth Street to North Greeley Street, includes roundabout construction. MnDOT said Friday that concrete paving work is underway for all the legs of the roundabout. Crews are also installing electrical conduit for street lighting, and curb and gutter installation in the area is almost finished.
Work on the fourth and final stage of the construction for this year started Thursday, in the area between the Legion Field bridge and south Fourth Street. Highway 19 is closed from Fourth Street to the bridge.
A detour for through traffic on Highway 19 remains in place on Lyon County Road 7 and Minnesota Highway 23. Highway 19 will be open to local traffic from Channel Parkway to South Fourth Street, but drivers are urged to be careful and watch for workers.
Starting Monday, the intersection of West College Drive and South Fourth Street will be closed, MnDOT said. Construction crews will be removing the pavement at the intersection, and making underground utility updates. The work means the intersection will be closed for a few weeks, the city of Marshall said.
Other Highway 19 crossings that are open include Marlene Street, Legion Field Road, Parkview Drive, North Greeley Street, and Marvin Schwan Memorial Drive. Access to downtown public parking is through Marvin Schwan Memorial Drive.
