One dead, two injured in Wood Lake fire truck crash
YELLOW MEDICINE COUNTY — One person was killed, and two seriously injured, in an accident where a Wood Lake fire truck overturned Friday night, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said a 43-year-old man was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Two other people, a 37-year-old man and a six-year-old boy, were transported to Avera Marshall Medical Center and then airlifted to Sioux Falls.
Around 6:36 p.m. Friday, Yellow Medicine County dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle accident on 490th Street, north of 160th Avenue near Lakeview School in Cottonwood. First responders found a Wood Lake fire truck on its side in the ditch. Three people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.
One person was found trapped under the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. His name is being withheld pending notification of family, the Sheriff’s Office said. The Sheriff’s Office identified the two injured occupants of the truck as Andrew Vanhecke, 37, and Beaux Vanhecke, 6, both of Wood Lake. The Sheriff’s Office did not have further information on their condition Saturday morning.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, Granite Falls Ambulance, Cottonwood Ambulance, the Cottonwood Fire Department, and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s office were among the agencies responding at the crash scene.
