History and more in downtown Marshall

MARSHALL — Art, music, and learning will all come together in Marshall’s downtown this weekend.

The annual Arts & Living History Festival will feature music and vendors, as well as a chance to learn more about the city’s 9/11 memorial.

“We liked the idea of moving to Memorial Park to highlight the history of the park,” said Cassi Weiss of Visit Marshall. Visit Marshall and the Lyon County Museum are the organizers of the festival.

The event starts at 9 a.m. Saturday near Memorial Park and Marvin Schwan Memorial Drive.

The festival features a variety of vendors, including artists, authors, historical organizations and more. There will also be live music from the Leon Olson Band from 9 to 11 a.m., and from ’50s and ’60s rock band Starfire from noon to 2 p.m.

At the center of the festival will be an 11 a.m. tour of the 9/11 Memorial in Memorial Park. Local community member Craig Schafer will share some of the story of how the city of Marshall ended up with a piece of beam from the World Trade Center, and how the memorial was designed around it.

Weiss said Memorial Park has turned out to be a good location for the festival, partly because the location is more accessible for parking, and partly because it’s close enough to the Marshall farmers market that visitors can enjoy both events.

“We did do (the festival) at Memorial Park last year, and we had a great turnout,” Weiss said. She said the number of vendors at the festival has grown from about 12 at last year’s event to 20 this year.

Starting at $3.95/week.
