WWII history comes to life

“Victory At Sea” event this weekend at Fagen Fighters museum

MARSHALL — Historic aircraft and military re-enactors will help bring history to life this weekend at the Fagen Fighters World War II Museum.

“This event is unlike any other,” said Anna McCosh, at the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum.

On Saturday and Sunday, the “Victory At Sea” event at the museum will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. While the event isn’t an air show, there will be scheduled flights by a variety of warbirds both days.

The aircraft at flying the event will include naval planes from WWII and post-WWII, as well as flights of amphibious aircraft and bombers. Visitors can also tour the museum, and on Saturday they can meet re-enactors sharing the history of WWII.

“We will have about 20 different re-enactors setting up camp here,” McCosh said.

On Saturday afternoon, visitors can also hear a talk by retired naval fighter pilot Ryan Christopherson. “He is a local veteran,” McCosh said.

Christopherson was a 1989 graduate of Clarkfield High School, who went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. He completed one deployment with the USS Abraham Lincoln, flying the ES3A Shadow jet. He later completed two more deployments as a Tomcat pilot, including an 11-month tour during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Christopherson returned to Minnesota, and served with the Air National Guard in Sioux Falls, before retiring in 2013.

McCosh said there will also be activities for kids during the event, including face painting, and opportunities to make your own dog tags.

Gates for the Victory At Sea event will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum.

More information on the event schedule, and advance ticket sales, are available online at www.fagenfighterswwiimuseum.org. McCosh encouraged visitors to purchase tickets in advance, to help avoid long lines at the door.

McCosh also encouraged visitors to watch for updates on parking availability at the event. Event parking is in a grassy area, which may be affected by inclement weather.

Starting at $3.95/week.
