Wood Lake Community Fair starts Monday
WOOD LAKE — Every year, Wood Lake residents bring all the fun of a fair to their small town. The 84th annual Wood Lake Community Fair is starting up Monday with three nights of rides, food and more.
It’s a unique celebration, said Donna Ricke of the Wood Lake Community Club.
“There aren’t many town fairs anymore,” Ricke said. “There are community festivals, but not many of them have a midway.”
Midway rides are one of the events running Monday through Wednesday night at the Wood Lake Fair. Ricke said there’s also food, family-friendly activities, and entertainment all three nights. A scavenger hunt kicks off Monday during the fair.
“It’s for all ages. It’s just kind of a fun thing to do,” she said. Some attractions, like the hamburger stand, are a Wood Lake tradition. The burger stand is the Wood Lake Community Club’s major fundraising event, and helps make other Wood Lake community events throughout the year possible, Ricke said.
Other attractions, like the Midwest Rides Carnival, the Lakeview Booster Club bingo stand, and the Wood Lake firemen’s dunk tank, will also be open all three nights of the fair. An exhibit hall will be open at the Wood Lake Community Center, featuring entries in categories like vegetables, handiwork and baked goods.
“We have something in our Community Center every night,” Ricke said. On Monday, Dueling Pianos will perform. On Tuesday night, fair organizers are bringing back a version of “Deal or No Deal” for local contestants. The game show debuted at last year’s fair, and it went well, Ricke said.
“We’re hoping it goes over even better this year,” she said.
On Wednesday night, the “Looney Lutherans” will bring their act to Wood Lake. The trio of performers will have some music, comedy and even a little audience participation.
Wednesday will be a big night for the fair, with events like the kiddie parade and grand parade also going on.
Ricke said music is another big part of the Wood Lake Fair. Different performers will be playing in the beer garden area each night. On Monday and Tuesday, Livin’ Rich Entertainment will be the DJ at the beer garden. On Tuesday night, the North 40 band will also perform, Ricke said. On Wednesday, Maiden Dixie will be the featured band.
Ricke said the Wood Lake Fair is a time the community really looks forward to.
“It’s always good. It brings local people together, and it’s kind of the last hurrah before school starts,” she said.
Updates and information on the fair are available online, at the Wood Lake Community Club’s Facebook page.
