Lyon Co. Fair opens today
Classic grandstand events, new attractions planned

Lyon County 4-H members answered a judge’s questions about their mini-lop rabbits during the rabbit show on Tuesday. The fair officially opens to the public this afternoon.
MARSHALL — Returning favorites and new attractions are coming together at the Lyon County Fair this week. Organizers said draws like free admission, carnival rides, grandstand events like the PRCA Rodeo and a variety of live music will all be at the fair.
“We think we’re going to hit it off well,” said Lyon County Fair Board President Mark Sleiter. The fair opens today with events like a steak fry, and a performance by Whitesidewalls. “And we’ve got some great weather coming” for the first day of the fair, Sleiter said.
There was lots of activity at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, as workers and volunteers prepared for the crowds. The carnival midway was being set up, while area kids and families gathered at the 4-H arena for the annual rabbit show. Later in the afternoon, the open class building was full of people dropping off projects, plates of baked goods and displays of vegetables and flowers.
4-H competitions and events will be held throughout the fair, from beef, swine and poultry shows to a llama costume show on Friday afternoon.
Sleiter said there will be a variety of entertainment and attractions coming to the fair this week. Events like the PRCA Rodeo and a demolition derby will be coming back to the grandstand. For more than 20 years, the rodeo has been a part of the Lyon County Fair, Sleiter said. Events like bareback riding, roping and bull riding will be held in the arena on Thursday and Friday nights. The show also includes fun for kids, like the Boot Scramble, and Friday night will be Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night.
Live music will be another fun part of the fair, Sleiter said. “We’ve got great bands.”
Performances each night of the fair will bring a variety of hit songs to the audience, from 1960s rock and roll to classic rock, pop and country. Whitesidewalls will perform during Wednesday’s steak fry. Show Me Your Hits will perform Thursday night, Rhino will perform Friday and Time Machine and Arch Allies will perform Saturday.
Sleiter said there’s some new entertainment coming at this year’s fair too. The “Ninja Experience” show will bring some high-flying action and stunts to the stage throughout the fair. And a completely new entertainment event is planned for Sunday.
“We’re trying to start something new in the grandstand,” Sleiter said. An ATV, UTV and motorcycle barrel race will be held at the grandstand on Sunday afternoon. The event will be a timed race featuring local riders. A free-will donation will be accepted for people to watch and cheer on the racers.
Sleiter said fair organizers were looking forward to seeing the event. So far, there seemed to be interest from the public.
“We’ve gotten a lot of people calling about it,” he said.
